How to make a Tonga puoro

God created us with the ability to sing and make music. “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the rock of our salvation-Psalm 95:1. Last week some students in S2 persevered to make their own musical instruments; these wonderful instruments are called puoro. Puoro sounds are like hearing mournful granny’s at the mareae. Puoro is believed to make people sleepy; they make a mournful sound that calms people down. How do we make puoro? Well you're going to find out.

                                                                            Clay and Mold

Firstly, to make a traditional moari taonga puoro or uke tangi tangi you need clay. Clay is soft and satisfying-clay is amazing: Soft, smooth and it can easily be shaped. Secondly, we roughly separated the clay and then shaped it into our palm. We made two circular shapes, relaventilly even. We then imprint our thumb into the sphere shape and with our index fingers we then pinch the puoro going around the clay ball in a circular motion. That was hard because before we knew it we were doing it again.

                                                                                Melody

Scratch the top of our taonga puoro with a toothpick and then smudge the line up. We then drill our Index finger into the circular shape. Pretty the clay of the ball up and then try and make a lovely melody out of it. I never thought I would make it that far but it appears I have. Every minute or so we hydrate our clay. I keep on blowing into my instrument but I just can not get a sound out of it. I give it to my teacher (whaea rachel) The expert “herherher” and there goes the puoro “what? I say in disbelief. I then try again. After the 1million false attempt I get a sound out of it. “Finally, I say and then tell my teacher. “Half of our breath in and the other out.”

Lastly, we got a pin and with our pencil we made designs on our puoro. Moari designs and patterns whatever you prefer. After we had done our design we just left them on the shelf. Finally, the job of making puoro is done.

In summary, Puoro are wonderful instruments to make.Making puoro can require perseverance; they are wonderful instruments to make if you see it through.
