Dark time
It was a chilly, brisk April night. And half the world had been engulfed in darkness. It was pitch-black and we couldn't see anything. I flicked on the torch and ushered my cousins ahead. Wondering our farm at night? People would think we were crazy. We had decided to go down to the creek alone. Cow droppings dotted the ground. Everywhere we looked there was gorse. “Things were different at night.” “Stay close,” I told them. Anything can be anywhere.
Trudging down the steep, rocky bank was hard. My energy was running away but we had to get to the creek. “Run,” I told my cousins “and don't stop!” I said in a faint voice. why should we run? “My cousins ask just run for your life, there is a monster in the bush”. My cousins started to hurtle down the bank afraid. Just watching my scrawny little cousin run made me laugh. They stopped in their tracks: Huffing, puffing, and breathing in deep like they had just run a marathon .“Is it gone yet? ” They asked, horrified. “April fools,” I said slyly. My cousins looked at me blankly, blinking slowly and breathing in deep. “ Are you kidding us, you made us run all that way for nothing.” My cousin said angrily. “At least we're here at the creek,” I said, trying to keep my face straight.
Three hours had passed and nothing had happened. All stayed still. What's gonna happen? Why are we here? “We wanna go home,” My cousins said. “Just wait!,” I exclaimed. “Something will happen”. I skimmed the torchlight across the creek looking for inspiration. What’s that? I wonder Creeping closer to the edge. There in the creek was something: Slithery, fat, and sluggish. “Do you guys see this lifeless creature? “Look, it's in the creek,” I said, waving my hand in front of their faces. “We're not gonna fall for that again” They said. Typical. “There” I said, “over there.” “Just look! “ “It’s an eel,” my cousin said, mumbling, and stepping back.
I started to steadily creep closer to the creek, keeping an eye on the: fat, sluggish slithery eel. One slip up and I could be over with - eel taka. Telling my cousins to stay back, I cautiously went towards the ravenous creature. Rolling up my sleeves, talking of my shoes, I nimbly trudge towards the creature. I dipped my hands in, and up came the eel trying to take a bite. I was scared and terrified. I quickly yanked my hand out. My heart was hammering against my chest. The eel then somersaulted up into the air then descended into the murky, freshwater. That was close, and before I knew it my cousin started to fire rocks into the creek.I froze letting my anger bubble up. “I was one step away from getting that eel and you had to do that!” Off went the eel down the river bank. Gone. “Why did you do that? “ We were just trying to help,” My cousins say. “Go home,” I told them, frustrated. “No more chatterbox.”
On the walk back home no one said a word. I was too mad to talk, My cousin breaks the ice “At least you're alive you could have been-ell taka. Your dreaming. I look at them. One thing “we're alive” I say, Second thing “ thank God we're alive and well”. “Thank you Lord for your beautiful New Zealand”.Third thing “stay away from me'' I say, running away under the bright moonlight.
